not sure about your budget of "affordable hotels"
there’s a Hotel Helang near the airport..charges about RM120 per night..
and plenty small but comfie motels around..
why dont you go to Tioman island?
its located near JB..nearer to spore, doesnt take up much of travelling time..
you can snorkle & dive there too..
the only difference with Langkawi is that..
Langkawi is a tax free island..so cheap beers & ciggies around..
