Based on my personal experience, i would definitely recommend grand plaza parkroyal which is located in Batu Feringghi, where its beach is lovely but mind you, you cant swim in there coz there are lots of jellyfishes!! refrain yourself from swimming in the sea!!
back to the hotel, i actually love the garden surrounding, the superb swimming pools, facilities are top-notch..spa is heaven, room interior is lovely but mind you its kinda small for a room they claimed as Grand Deluxe room..always choose room which offering the sea view with balcony..never ever choose those on garden or hillviews coz you will end up seeing a stretch of roads, which i think it quite noisy!!..also choose room on the 5th floor onwards coz the liveband in the lounge is kinda loud around midnite… the room rates start at MYR450.00++ and above..pretty expensive..but the rooms have recently had a new facelift and lots of room amenities added inside and so i would say, its not too bad..
foodwise, never dine in their restaurant except when you have those free breakfast added to your room….not because the food is lousy but the prices are way too expensive!!!.. a pint of beer will coz you USD30.00!! its the better to walk out from the hotel coz there are many bistros, cafes serving good quality local and international food and drinks..
anyway, i would say among all the hotels you listed up there, i prefer to stay in this chic hotel despite all those minor glitz!!
happy travelling!
i stay in Penang and i’ve been to all the hotels… these are the ones i like..
1. Park Royal
2. Lone Pine
3. Shangri La
Good luck and have fun!
I’ve been there last 2 week. I recommend Grand Plaza Parkroyal because it’s a beautiful hotel with nice view and a lovely garden. Golden Sand Hotel is nice too, but it’s not in your list. Lone Pine’s the oldest hotel at Bt. Ferringhi, although it’s old, but it’s a ideal place to stay too.
I’m not sure about the jelly fish that groovylicious said, it’s based on seasons. I’ve only see jelly fish this Jan, 2007 at Tanjung Bungah, a nearby beach.
Okay there’s a difference in terms of location. All 3 hotels are located at Batu Ferringhi except Copthrone Orchid Hotel which is located at Tanjung Bungah. At the Copthrone, you get to enjoy both the beach as well as the city because of its closeness to the city. Gurney Drive is about a 5 minutes drive away from the hotel compared to Batu Ferringhi which is 20 mins away.
However the rooms at the Copthorne is rather slightly outdated.
A friend of mine stayed in Crown Jewel Hotel when he went to Penang last year. He said the rooms there are "gloriously spacious and comfortable" and the staff are very accommodating.

Parkroyal for sure. It was given a brand new facelift and there are many types of rooms you can choose from and the swimming pool is amazing. The buffet are something you should look out for also. At night time, the street bazaar is the closest to the hotel. I’ll say, go for parkroyal and ditch the rest. you won’t regret it. However, if you are willing to spend RM500 per night, go for Shangri-La Rasa Sayang. It’s worth every penny spent.
