  1. This route is well-trodden so you’ll have no problems. There are very cheap places to stay at every stop along the way.

From Chiang to Laos, most people take a bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khorng. From here they cross the river border to Huay Xai (pronounced "Sigh"). From Huay Xai, you can buy a ‘slow boat’ ticket to Luang Prabang. The boat takes 1 and a half days. From Luang Prabang to anywhere, there are buses. I can speak good Thai and ok Laos so I sussed out that the tourist buses are better quality but double the price of the locals’ buses. So take your pick. You’ll have to look a bit harder to find the local buses.

Most people leave Laos at Vientiane, the capital and cross to the small Thai city of Nong Khai. From here to Bangkok, it’s nice to catch the train. It’s not expensive, about 600 Baht in second class.

Accommodation is available everywhere on your trip. You’ll never need to pay more than $5 in Laos or 300 Baht in Thailand unless you want a bit of luxury.

Restaurants are no problem. If you want to avoid spending too much, avoid the obviously Western restaurants. Try "laap pa" in Laos. Its a fish dish. As for Thailand, well, there are people selling food literally everywhere. Avoid meat that’s been sitting exposed.

    Have a good time.

  2. Good question. I want to do the same trip but there is no way I am going on a boat, so having researched, the lengthy trip overland is not worth it as I don’t have that amount of time. I am doing Bangkok – Chiang Mai- Bangkok then Bangkok -Vientiane-Bangkok. Overnight bus fare and train fares are cheap, less than US$20 one way. Air to CM is about $45US Didn’t check to Vientiane. You have to do a lot of googling to get information.

Google Frommers to get some info on rooms and food. From what I’ve read elsewhere, rooms are available from $3 up. Food from $1.50. Enjoy!!

Found out that Nok Air and Laos Airlines have some reasonably priced flights…….roughly US$40. You get there safely in an hour.

  3. Always take care and be safe.
